The heartbreak and sadness they both have at giving her the best chance to live in the normal world without regular Mutant prejudices is quite touching. For that matter, there's the scene where you see Leela's parents leave her at the orphanage. They're so ashamed of what they are, and so sure that Leela would be better off without them, they'd rather Leela kill them than find out the truth. In particular the line "That would be best".
